I'm breaking down and buying exhaust TOMORROW MORNING!! I have an 04 grand cherokee V8 5.7 Liter with an intake and stock exhaust. The intake seems to be awesome at giving a little more power and a lot more engine noise and even a little more of a gurgling sound on the exhaust. BUT...i'm looking for more power, and a LITTLE more sound. I don't want to sound like some redneck drivin around in his jacked up pickup with exhaust you can hear around the block (no offense to you rednecks, i love you all), but i do want a little controlled powerful yet subtle sounding exhaust. and CHEAP. is just a new muffler the answer? is this something i can just swing into checker and pick up? (i'm goin for the immediate gratification thing) thanks for any input, any input at all no matter how senseless. :)

A muffler is a good upgrade. Go to a great muffler place in your area and get a new muffler and a tip. They can do a couple different mufflers but something in the 20" range would be your best bet. Also, I got a Magnaflow and I'm very happy with it.
If you wanted to go for the real sweet stuff, talk to Kolak. Google Kolak Performance to get his website. He's made one of the best WJ exhausts out there, and people rave about his stuff. Expensive, though.

"I have an 04 grand cherokee V8 5.7 Liter..." Do you mean the 4.7L?
Magnaflow systems are awesome :)

Well, I have a custom system (bought very cheap off a nice guy on here) and it has a Magnaflow muffler. It makes a distinct difference in power and is not too noisy at all. Well worth it.
If you're thinking of a cold air intake, I have the Airaid system and it is a little noisy but very easy to fit, only noisy when accelerating and also make a noticable diffreence.
If you want instant gratification, look at the Jet Performance chips. About $238 and five minutes to install. Well worth it!!

Its all prefrence on what you want it to sound like im a Borla person myself, some like magnaflow, some dont. But if you want more power id go with an exhaust system from the cat (catback system) over just a muffler and tip.
If you want a quality cat-back system at an affordable price, check out Gibson. I run one on my off road XJ and have seriously abused it, and it has held up great. It's over 5yrs old and is still very solid.

yes, sorry i meant 4.7. i think i'm going to do a random cheap muffler, see how i like the change in sound and then if it's to die for, then i'll just splurge on a system. and as far as the chip goes...i think i'll order it tonight. which chip should i get and which exact model? i have an intake already and soon exhaust or a muffler.

Well JET has a bad review from our second-in-command, so check out other companies like Hypertech. Also, look at lesser known companies, who may have better products than the big guys. Jeepforum.com should have your best info.

Well to be honest it wasn't much of a review, I think I may have gotten a bad module, or they just didn't have the kinks worked out yet.
After I installed my Jet module the Jeep was stuck in 1st, so I don't know how much of a performance gain there would be, if any...
Also, I had a hard time returning it, even though the salesman said I could return for any reason.

Get a tuner vs a chip if your gonna spend the money.

like a Hypertech tuner. I hope they come out with one for the 4.7L WK, they recently released the 5.7L version

What's the deal with tuners exactly? Do they just mess with stuff and then you're done, or do they have to stay with the car for the changes to stay effective? If you can do a once-and-you're-done thing, I say we colllaborate and pass the same tuner around to each other. Pay the original person back that bought it and everyone pays their own shipping....

well i'm going to not do the instant gratification thing on exhaust. i've found this: http://www.autotrucktoys.com/jeep_grand_cherokee/Magnaflow-Jeep-Grand-Cherokee-Cat-Back-Exhaust-System-99-04-P10903C2089.aspx whaddya think? is that going to be really loud or still pretty controlled sounding? i also went into checker today to check out magnaflow mufflers. they explained to me that the exhaust was a "straight through" design. what does that mean and how is it different from other mufflers? should i get this cat back system or just stick a muffler in there?

We all have 3 different engines, 3 different tuners.

FlyinLo: I realize that. Since there's at least two of every engine represented on this forum, it's a worthwhile endeavor. You pass around the 4.7L Tuner, me and Street will bounce around the VSixxle tuner, and those high-rollin HP eaters can have the HEMI tuner.
That exhaust won't be too loud, but your wallet will be screaming. $500 is a lot, not counting installation (unless you do it yourself). Try a muffler. Worse come to worse, you upgrade it to an exhaust down the line.

If your willing to spend that much, I'd look at other brands... like borla! lol. But look around, see what you like the sound of, ect. And as the tuners go, Id definatly go in on one but who else has a 5.2L engine like me.....

Judging by my experience with the SCT tuners, you cant have a "community" tuner, they are all VIN locked, so once somone uses it, it cannot be used again on another vehicle. Im assuming Hypertech is the same way, or else they wouldnt make any money but im not for sure, so please correct me if I am wrong.

i dont think it's that expensive. Well for me anyways, i live in canada and ive been lookin at borla and magnaflow exhaust, and the prices i got for those are fucken crazy ass. over $800 bux for either one. I paid $555 for kolaks exhaust with shipping. The Kolak system is a 3" i got flowmaster 70 series muffler, new carsound cat converter, a tip, and new mandrel bent tailpipe. The boral and magnaflow are 2.5"

xxDRIVER just said that most tuners are locked to a VIN to prohibit sharing. :(

I think that's because the tuner stores the original settings before it changes them. So it can restore the factory program when needed. (warranty work)
