Well, the auto-dim mirror install failed for one very stupid reason. I obviously didn't do a thorough examination of the mirror before I installed it.
I'm not sure if the auto-dim feature will work, it was daytime when I tried the installation.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, that is what I will give you. In this picture, you will see one obvious difference between the limited mirror (with the chrome belt molding) and the laredo-style mirror.

I know, I know.... :witstupid:
Thank you WJ_Jeep for talking me through this on the phone, you're a wealth of knowledge.
I think I'll keep the mirror in case I ever decide to go with the chrome belt molding. I got it much cheaper than I could at a dealership.

Here's a shot of the mirror from the rear, for those of you wondering what the auto dim mirror looks like:

Can you take it apart and use your mounting base?

I tried to pry the pieces apart but felt like I as going to break it.
It might be possible, but I'm not gonna mess with it.

Derrick,
Did you have the opportunity to test the auto-dim functionality when you were out in the dark testing the HID?

WJ, I tried to test it by covering the rearview & sideview mirror with blankets and hitting the sensor with an LED but I really couldn't tell if the side mirror was dimming or not.
I didn't want to leave the mirror on because rain was moving in and you can see what would've been exposed.
I swapped the limited mirror back out for the stock one as soon as I noticed the difference.
I think I'm going to keep it for now and I'll be on the lookout for a passenger side Limited mirror because if I decide to do the chrome window moldings I'll need them.
You can see in this picture how the chrome strip extends all the way up to the front of the mirror:
