View Full Version : Synthetic Oil with LONG Interval?

I'm in need of an oil change, but I don't really want to do Mobil 1 again, simply because they set my service interval at 5,000 miles. If I'm going to pay $75 at a clip to change my oil, I want it to be a good value. The way I figure it, I can do conventional oil for $24.95 for 3,000 miles. That means that $75 should give me at least 9,000 miles for it to be a decent value.

What oil do you guys use? I've heard good things about Royal Purple, Q, etc.

Also, is ithe interval dependant on the mechanic or the oil? That may solve my whole problem...

Who changes their own oil? I'm wondering how tough it really is, considering I have the mechanical inclination of a spoon.

I use Mobil 1 and still change it every 4k miles at the most.. Last change was at only 3.5k. Gives me piece of mind.

I use mobil 1 Syn 10w30 and change every 4500miles..
Changing oil is probably one of the easist things you can do next to changing a air filter.. Go by yourself some ramps, or if ur small u can just slide under w/o ramps. Unbolt the 12mm (i think) bolt under the oil pan and let it drain into a catch can, follow that by removing your oil filter make sure you remove the gasket as well they often get stuck on the block wait for all the oil to drain, lube the new gasket on the new filter and hand tighten it on then put the nut back on the oil pan and go up top, open the oil cap and pour in your 6 quarts.. and your done..
$75 Verses $30 and 10minutes of your time.. Ill take the $30.

Edit: and you can prolly run 6000 to 8000miles no problem with synthetic.. just when u get around the 5000mile mark take a peak and it and make sure its still a light color, if its dark then your not gonna get much more milage out of it.

I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance and I change that every 5000 miles. Changing your own oil is good because it’s cheaper and you would know that the job was done right. fyi you would want to stick with one oil and not change brands or change over from synthetic to conventional. Thats was I've been told.

$75... I use Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 extended performance filter, of course I do it myself. It costs roughly $40.00... I change it at the 3K interval...

we own a oil change center and 80% of our customer base always purchase pennzoil and stick with it. i have always used pennzoil, i personally do not really like synthetic, as once you use it you cannot switch back to regular without some adverse effects to your seals and such. i have heard royal purple is esquisate however.

Ive been meaning to try out royal purple myself to see if there is any difference. I know they're always advertising on the Power Block. Foose uses it so Id say give it a try.

Im pretty sure you are able to switch back to regular, but you just shouldnt start running synthetic over 20 or so thousand miles if you have been using regular. Just because synthetic is smaller molecules and can fit inbetween seals where previous regular oil couldnt.. but switching back to the thicker regular oil wont harm the seals which are used to a smaller oil.

AMSOIL IS THE BEST do your trany and engine filters and fluids, good for 5 to 7 thousand depending how hard you are on your heep, but will cost you estimated, $200.00 installed total for everything.

You can start running it a little bit later down the line. When you cross the 75-85k mark then you shouldn't start putting synthetic in your engine, unless you know what you’re doing. The reason is, synthetic does a very good job cleaning out your engine and it would clean out all of the regular oil that’s in there. Why this is bad is because regular oil does a very good job in sealing up any cracks in your engine block, which means you would start to have a oil leak (in some cases). I have about 165,000 miles on my jeep but I always look out for oil leaks... so far so good (knock on wood), but the second that I do start to leak than I would have to switch back to the regular oil.

wow blackattack... yeah do it yourself! i only run mobil 1, it's a great oil. i team that up with a fram tough gaurd. probably costs me around $30 and also i take my time doing it.

think about this, you know how slow oil can drain, if the place does it in 10-20 minutes total how much of your old oil do you think they got out? i usaully allow about an hour to do my whole job correctly and i would never let anyone else do my oil, that's the fu*king blood to the engine. i'm upset that i have to use shops for more complex stuff like tranny, etc but what can you do. i guess i just don't trust people, or correction - i don't trust their respect for my car. i know if i was in their shoes i wouldn't care for a customer's oil change as much as if it was my own.

just my two cents.

also i switched the car over to synthetic at around 60K miles because that's when i bought it. don't know what was ran in it before but i've run mobil one every 3500, if anything when the mileage gets high i'll just switch to a heavier weight mobil one, wouldn't want to run regular in it.

AMS has a new synthetic out and they say change it every 25,000 miles or once a year

I run Mobil one on my 2006 Hemi, also ran it on my 2005 4.7 Rocky. I change every 5000 miles. The key is the premium filter. Experiment and check your oil color. If it is dark after 3000-4000 miles, change it. If it is light keep going. I personally wouldn't go past 5000 miles on regular mobil one. They have Mobil one extended performance(12,000 miles). I was going to try that and change the filter at 5000 miles, but decided if I was going to change the filter. I might as well change the oil. I pay $6 a quart in Chicago, and $10 for a mobil one filter. Thinking of trying the K&N oil filter. Does anyone have any feedback on their oil filter?

I got mobil 1 in my moms car, and they said you can do 5K easy on a oil change, but in the other end, it costs more...
