If I was to keep the stock piping what size universal muffler would I need?
2.5" single in single out
How about how long? Or is stock piping even 2.5"?

see my post on JU. if you can avoid it, i highly recommend AGAINST getting muffler only. it's a noisy, nasty thang. droning on the road, and resonance at partial throttle around 4,500rpm on my 4.7HO.
if you absolutely have to get a muffler only, get the SUV version which is longer. i don't remember the specifics.
get the catback. borla is probably a little louder than magnaflow. the magnaflow is nice, but might be a bit too quiet for whippersnapper posers like yourself. ;)

well if you do custom, a better muffler shop could build you something really nice similar to the catback. you should use a muffler and a resonator, and just use the size muffler that gives you the sound you want.

Personally I like nothing but pipes but it depends on area and sound regulations. I cut everything off from the catalytic back using 4 inch pipe custom bent for the truck. Check out american muffler

I had straight pipes on my old car but that got old quickly. I do A LOT of highway driving and I can't have that loud drone :(

Straight pipes could get you a nasty ticket too, not to mention not passing inspection.

Go the route of a super trap muffler......Spend the money on the SS one's. All you need to do is add or remove discs to tone your exhaust note.
So all straight pipe and just a super trap:horse:

onehothemi, you are New York, so maybe you can help me out. What are the regulations that NY'ers have to follow?
I guess I just need to take the ten minute trip to my exhaust shop and have a chat with the guy. When I'm ready to mod, I will do it.

97 db for exhaust must have cat convert and o2 sensor to pass inspection and must be factory or functional to polution standards, noise is noise put fake mufflers or really hugh flow and you'll get the growl. i did straight pipes from the cat converter and got pulled over and complimented literally. just dont blare hard where you know there are cops or really residential areas.

I shouldn't have too much concern about the cops; V6's don't draw too much attention unless they're in an NSX. I will have a talk my exhaust guy and see what he recommends. He will probably hold different mufflers up to the pipe for me to listen, or I can just describe what I'm looking for and he'll hook me up.
